The election battle is heating up with every passing day with just five days left to the big day.

Taking a cue from its arch rival, the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) in the State have begun massive campaign through social media, according to an Economic Times report.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a strong network in the social media sites – Facebook and Whatapp and is been exploiting the same as was done during previous Assembly elections in the two north-eastern states of Assam and Manipur.

Now the CPI-M has taken to social media in a big way to counter BJP’s virtual campaign.

The Left party started its social media campaign towards the end of 2016, when every district and sub divisional committees had put up Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups where at least 15 posts were posted every day, the stated.

BJP’s social media expertise had received exemplary response both in Assam and Manipur during their respective Assembly polls earlier.

Maintaining the same momentum, the saffron brigade had launched a strong campaign crusade in Tripura as well. The party had also organized social media workshops which were attended by over 1,000 workers in the poll-bound State.

Now the CPI-M is following suit. Rahul Sinha, a member of the state social media team of CPI-M was quoted as saying, “We created a team from our own members, and we haven’t hired any outside agency. We have Facebook pages and set up WhatsApp groups as well.”

Sinha further added that as Twitter isn’t very popular in Tripura, the party is not doing too many Twitter postings. “But we get substantial hits on our FB pages,” the report quoted Sinha as saying.

Meanwhile, veteran CPI-M leader Brinda Karat also maintained that the party’s presence in the social media has substantially increased, and it has been getting ‘very good response to the poll campaign’, the report further added.

Tripura goes to polls on February 18 (Sunday) next.
