Tripura CM unveils Rabindranath Tagore’s statue in Agartala

Tripura Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb has unveiled a statue of nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in front of the Umakanta Academy in Agartala in Tripura.

The particular school was established by Maharaja Birchandra Manikya in 1890.

During the occasion on Tuesday, the chief minister said, “Our country has always stood tall before the world for its rich ancient culture and traditions.”

“Our culture is so strong that even the British rulers could not destroy it during its rule,” he said.

“The great poet had a close attachment with our school, which he visited thrice during his seven visits to the state during his lifetime”, said former student of the school, Siddhartha Debroy.

A statue of the poet had been installed on the premises of the Umakanta Academy way back in 1961.

However, it got destroyed in 1970.

The alumni association of the school reinstalled the new statue of Tagore in its place.

The state government had also initiated a plan to set up a cultural hub worth rupees 200 crores at the Nazrul Kalakshetra in Agartala.

It is also taking measures to set up a branch of the New Delhi based Lalit Kala Academy in the  Kalakshetra.
