Agartala: Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Tipra Motha have reached New Delhi for a key meeting aimed at addressing differences within the ruling coalition ahead of the Village Committee (VC) elections and the 2028 Tripura Assembly polls, party sources said.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and state BJP president Abhishek Debroy have already reached New Delhi. A delegation of senior Tipra Motha leaders, led by party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, is also scheduled to participate.
According to sources, the meeting is expected to focus on resolving issues that have persisted between the two allies since the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, which the BJP and Tipra Motha contested separately despite being partners in the state government.
Relations between the two parties deteriorated during the TTAADC election campaign, as leaders from both sides exchanged sharp political attacks in a closely contested and polarised campaign. Although the parties have continued to remain part of the ruling coalition, the differences that surfaced during the elections have remained unresolved.
With the VC elections approaching and the Assembly elections due in 2028, both parties are now seeking to restore coordination within the alliance, sources said.
According to BJP sources, the party’s central leadership is also in favour of resolving the differences between the coalition partners. A majority of leaders in both the BJP and Tipra Motha are understood to favour reconciliation in the interest of maintaining the stability of the alliance ahead of future electoral contests.
Tipra Motha joined the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura after signing an agreement with the Centre in 2024 on issues related to the development and welfare of the state’s indigenous people. Since then, the two parties have jointly governed the state, although political differences resurfaced during the TTAADC elections when they chose to contest separately.
The outcome of the Delhi meeting is expected to shape the future course of the alliance as both parties prepare for the upcoming VC elections and begin positioning themselves for the 2028 Assembly polls.
