Agartala: The Howrah River has seen a significant rise in water levels due to heavy rains, causing severe flooding in the West District in Tripura and following this the floodwaters have inundated numerous homes, forcing residents to seek refuge in government-established relief camps.

West District Magistrate Vishal Kumar said that a total of ten temporary relief camps have been opened to accommodate the displaced population.

As of today, 280 people have taken shelter in these camps.

The DM has assured the public that various measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.

“We are continuously monitoring the situation and providing necessary assistance to the displaced individuals”, Kumar stated.

The flooding has particularly affected low-lying areas such as Baldakhal, Sri Lanka Basti, and Chandrapur within Agartala city.

“These neighborhoods are currently submerged, leading to the mass evacuation of residents. The situation is exacerbated by a recent cyclone that has caused extensive damage throughout the state of Tripura. Large trees have been uprooted, taking down power lines and resulting in widespread power outages”, he said.

Emergency crews are working tirelessly to restore electricity and clear the debris. Despite the extensive property damage and disruptions, no casualties have been reported thus far.

“Electricians are working around the clock to repair the power lines and restore services as quickly as possible”, Kumar added.

Additionally, the cyclone has damaged several houses due to fallen trees. A survey will be conducted by the District Commission to assess the extent of the damage. Financial assistance will be provided to the affected families to aid in their recovery.
