Tripura poll violence

Agartala: At least ten security personnel, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR) troopers and Tripura Police personnel, were injured after violent clashes erupted between supporters of Tipra Motha and the BJP in Tripuraโ€™s Dhalai district on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the Lambo area of Kamalpur when a BJP rally, led by local MLA and former minister Manoj Kanti Deb, came under attack. The rally was being held to campaign for the BJP candidate in the Asharambari ADC constituency and had passed through the Halahali area under the TTAADC jurisdiction.

Security personnel had been deployed in adequate numbers to maintain law and order in view of the rally. However, BJP leaders alleged that as the procession reached Lambo, a large mob launched an unprovoked attack on party supporters.

โ€œThe attack was severe. At least four to five vehicles escorting the rally were vandalised. The assailants are believed to be Tipra Motha supporters,โ€ a local BJP leader said.

Video footage from the scene showed stones and brickbats being hurled at police and TSR personnel as tensions escalated. According to police sources, no fewer than ten security personnel sustained injuries in the violence.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The windshield of MLA Manoj Kanti Debโ€™s vehicle was also partially damaged in the incident.

The clash comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2026 Tripura ADC elections. Notably, former Tipra Motha leader and ex-militant Ananta Debbarma is contesting the Asharambari seat on a BJP ticket after switching allegiance shortly before the party announced its candidate list.

Debbarma had previously served as an Executive Member in the Tipra Motha-led TTAADC council formed after the 2021 elections.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers were armed with wooden sticks and attempted to block the BJP rally from entering the area. โ€œThey pelted stones and bricks with the clear intention of stopping the rally,โ€ a BJP spokesperson said on condition of anonymity.

Security has been intensified in the area following the incident, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
