The chairman of Press Council of India (PCI), Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad on Wednesday called on Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Chief Secretary Sanjeev Ranjan, Principal Secretary of Home department and DGP A K Shukla despite his hectic schedule here and expressed serious concerns about the killing of two journalists in recent times.

PCI chairman Justice C K Prasad, who arrived in the state on Tuesday evening to investigate the killing of two journalists in the state during last months took ‘suo motu’ case of the killing of the two journalists. He also called on the office-bearers of Agartala Press Club and other representatives of various journalist bodies of the state.

During the meeting, the media fraternity apprised the PCI chief that the state government had accepted and implemented their demand for formation of SIT to investigate the murders of two journalists.

However, another team of journalists under the banner of the Forum for Protection of Journalists led by veteran editor Subal Kumar Dey demanded CBI inquiry into the killings. They also demanded safety and security of the working journalists of the state.

Justice C K Prasad also visited the home of slain journalist Sudip Datta Bhowmik and consoled the family members.

A local newspaper journalist, Sudip Dutta Bhowmik (48) was shot dead inside the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) 2nd Battalion headquarters at Ramchandra Nagar in Agartala on November 21.

Earlier, Young television journalist Santanu Bhowmik(28), was hacked to death while covering a demonstration of IPFT, a tribal based political party at Mandai under West Tripura district on September 20 last.

Police sources said that the SITs would submit their charge-sheets well ahead of the stipulated 90 days and investigation of both murder cases is going on right track.
