The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is likely to be implemented in Tripura too. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday is learnt to have conveyed this message to a delegation of Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) in New Delhi.

INPT president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl led a four member regional party delegation to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh. INPT general secretary Jagadhish Debbarma was also present in the meeting.

“We are happy with the meeting. Home Minister Rajnath Singh gave us the indication that he was also in favour of the process of implementing NRC in Tripura,” Hrangkhawl said adding “after completing the process in Assam, the same process will be started in Tripura.”

Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and Satyendra Garg, joint secretary (NE) in the Home Ministry were also present in the meeting.

The INPT last month submitted a memorandum to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India pursuing their demand for NRC in Tripura.

In fact, ever since the NRC process was started in Assam, demands for similar NRC has been pouring from BJP ruled states. BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi have also raised their demands for NRC in these two states.
