‘Kidnapped’ teenage girl from Chennai traced to Tripura

Police have traced a girl who went missing from Aminjikarai (Chennai) in Tamil Nadu to Tripura.

Reports stated that the girl who was missing for more than a month has since been handed over to her parents.

A Grade VIII student at a school in Aminjikarai, the 13-year-old girl went to a shop near her school on March 15 last and did not return home.

The girl’s father, an auto driver, lodged a complaint with the Aminjikarai Police who traced her to Tripura. A police team went to Tripura and brought the girl back.

Preliminary investigation by cops has revealed that the girl had been allegedly kidnapped by a 25-year-old man who lived near her house.

The girl told the police that she “eloped” with the 25-year-old man on March 15 last as he had promised to tie the knot with her.  She escaped with him during the school lunch break.

The man has since been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and remanded to judicial custody.
