The Unokoti district secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Bijoy Roy on Monday denied any political angle to the incident of the alleged killing of a 32-year-old tribal woman by her in-laws at Nalkata in North Tripura district on Friday night.

CPI-M leader Roy said she was a victim of family dispute.

As per a TOI report, Roy alleged that husband of the tribal woman who was allegedly killed by her in-laws, had a serious, ongoing family dispute with his brothers which resulted in the murder of the woman.

The TOI report quoted Roy saying, “The BJP is twisting the incident to derive political mileage. We condemn such an attempt and have requested police to take appropriate action against the culprits as per law.”

As per media reports the tribal woman was allegedly killed in North Tripura by her in-laws on Friday night for allegedly voting against the CPI-M candidate in the February 18, 2018 Tripura Assembly elections.

Media reports also stated that the police were informed by the neighbours of the victim that her father- and brother-in-law barged into her house in Nalkata at night and physically assaulted her with bricks and sticks for alleging shifting her allegiance from the left party to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The reports also stated that the accused disappeared from the scene as soon as the woman’s neighbours came to her rescue. Later the woman succumbed to her injuries.

The husband of the woman later filed an FIR against a total of three persons.
