Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday appointed party leader Dr Ajoy Kumar as the in-charge of three Northeast states including Sikkim, Nagaland and Tripura.

Confirming the news, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary KC Venugopal in a press release issued on Wednesday said “Congress president has appointed Dr Ajoy Kumar as AICC in-charge of Sikkim, Nagaland and Tripura with immediate effect.”

A former IAS officer, Kumar was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha as an MP from the Jamshedpur constituency in Jharkhand.

He quit the Congress party to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly elections in 2019.
