A middle-aged woman, going by the name of Manika Pal Das, after allegedly having a huge altercation with her husband Shyamal Das a plumber by profession), set herself on fire on Friday morning at Teliamura – a town in Khowai district in Tripura. The entire incident has cast a pall of gloom in the area.

Manika has suffered 90 per cent burn injuries. On getting the news, the Tripura Fire Service personnel rushed to Manika’s house and took her to the local hospital where the doctors, after preliminary treatment, referred her to GB Hospital in Agartala.

It may be mentioned that in Tripura, the rule is that if a person sets himself/herself on fire or receives burn injuries, then it is the Fire Service personnel who takes the responsibility of taking him or her to the hospital. Of course, small Bolero cars are used for the purpose.

It is reported that Manika’s husband was not at home when she set herself on fire. The Teliamura police are investigating the case.
