A Bailey bridge collapsed in Jolebasha area under Kanchanpur sub-division of Tripura after an overloaded coal truck went over it.

It is reported that the bridge is a 15-ton capacity one and the truck was carrying up to 35-ton of coal – much beyond the permissible limit.

The driver and helper of the truck bearing the registration No – AS01DD7597 – is absconding.

The Bailey bridge is the only means of communication for the people of Jolebasha area with the rest of the world.

The people are at their wits’ end over the incident. It is reported that when the Manik Sarkar government was in power in Tripura, four pillars were constructed near the existing Bailey bridge to construct a new one.

There has been no progress on the additional bridge construction work since then.
