In order to ease the problem of traffic congestion in the hilly state of Sikkim, the State Government has extended the deadline of the first phase of widening and improvement of 32 roads in the state to March 3, 2018.

GM Gurung, the state Road and Bridges Minister in his statement to the Assembly said that the Department is working tirelessly to meet the deadline in spite of several difficulties in execution of the project.

Heavy ongoing traffic while moving asphalt mixers and stone crushers add to the already worsening situation of traffic control in the State.

Paving and laying of optical fibre cables along the single lane roads are also causing delay in completion of the work.

In order to cope up with the slew of incoming cars and heavy congestion due to weather conditions and incoming vehicles from other nearby states, the State Government along with the 32 roads has also revised the deadlines for the completion of NH710 Melli-Manpur-Namchi road to December 18, NH710 Tarku-Damthang-Namchi to March 19, NH310 Ranipool-Gangtok Bye Pass to June 19, SH Nayabazaar-Legship to December 19 and Manpur-Nayabazaar and Nayabazaar-Namchi roads would be completed by December this year.
