City Police on Sunday nabbed three persons, including a woman, from the Bhetapara area here for allegedly carrying out fake registrations of Aadhaar cards in the city.

The arrested trio has been identified as Chandan Kumar, 23 and Subhash Mirdha, 25 from Calcutta and Jonali Das, 30, from the Dharapur area on the outskirts of Guwahati.

Hatigaon police, who had picked them up in an operation, said the accused would charge Rs 300 for fake registrations. They started “registrations” from Sunday morning and took “fees” from six persons.

The police said the accused had an office on the ground floor of the Saraighat housing complex in the Bhetapara area.

“They said they had licences to set up such enrolment centres, adding that they had already run such a centre in Bengal. So, we are now scrutinising their documents,” said an official of Hatigaon police station.

The police have seized a computer and a printing machine along with some documents.

“They claimed to have permission to issue Aadhaar cards only for residents in Calcutta. According to them, one Aman Mandal had brought them here with the help of Jonali whom he met during a training session on Aadhaar in Calcutta. A complaint has been filed by officials of Unique Identification Authority of India, Guwahati, at Hatigaon police station,” assistant commissioner of police Mousumi Kalita said.
