Two budding tennis players from Assam, Tanisha Kashyap and Udit Gogoi have been selected to represent India in the upcoming Junior Federation Cup and Junior Davis Cup.
The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men’s tennis which is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The equivalent of Davis Cup for women is called Junior Federation Cup.
Speaking to Northeast Now, Ankush Dutta, General Secretary, All Assam Tennis Association (AATA) said, “It is a huge boost to Assam’s tennis that two of our players have been selected to represent the nation in the biggest team event in tennis. This is for the first time Assam players will represent the Indian National Teams in both under 14 and under 16 events of boys and girls categories in the same year. Vishal Uppal will be the coach cum captain of the Junior Davis Cup Team and Radhika Tulpule Kanitkar will be the coach cum captain of the Junior Fed Cup Team.”
The Asia-Oceania qualifying round of both the tournament will be played in Kuching, Malaysia. The Junior Davis Cup will start from April 9 and the Junior Federation Cup will start from April 16, this year.
Dutta said that both these players are very talented and they have represented their country in the international arena earlier.
“Tanisha Kashyap played in ‘Road to Wimbledon’ which is the junior version of Wimbledon and Udit Gogoi played in ‘Road to Roland Garros’ which is the junior version of the French Open. Tanisha is currently ranked number 1 in India in the U-16 level while Udit is ranked number 4 in India in U-14 category” he said.
Tanisha Kashyap hails from Hajo though her father works in Saudi Arabia. Udit Gogoi’s hometown is in Duliajan.
