Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday urged students to go through the newly enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, 2019.

“Go through CAA and not fall into the trap of parties who are trying to spread rumours,” Shah said while addressing a public meeting in Jharkhand’s Porehayat.

Shah also alleged that some parties are spreading rumours and inciting violence for their political interest.

He assured that CAA will not be used for taking away citizenship from the citizens of the country.

“CAA is to give citizenship to religiously persecuted refugees, it is not to take away the citizenship of any Indian,” he added.

Shah’s comments came following widespread protests that have been carried out by students from various educational institutions across the country.

Apart from Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday assured that the Act does not affect any citizen of India of any religion.

On Monday, Modi tweeted, “I want to unequivocally assure my fellow Indians that CAA does not affect any citizen of India of any religion. No Indian has anything to worry regarding this Act.”

“This Act is only for those who have faced years of persecution outside and have no other place to go except India,” he added.
