According to a TOI report, the ministry has already notified a draft proposal, according to which, there would be no hike in the fees of registration of electric or battery-operated vehicles.

It has also been reported that the union transport ministry has also proposed to hike the fees for automated and manual fitness tests.

It has been proposed that additional Rs 50 will be charged for each day, if the owners of vehicles, which are more than 15 years, fail to get the fitness certificate before the expiry of the certificate.

Besides, fitness tests for twice a year have also been proposed for vehicles both commercial diesel and petrol which are more than 15 years old.

It may be mentioned that currently, registration of vehicles of all categories across the country except Delhi is valid only for 15 years.

In Delhi, there is a complete ban on re-registration of vehicles both petrol and diesel which are 15 years and 10 years old respectively.

It has been reported that for two-wheelers, against the current registration fee of Rs 50 the union transport ministry has proposed a new registration fee of Rs 1,000.

The renewal registration fee has been proposed at Rs 2,000 for two-wheelers.

In the case of cabs, it has been proposed that the registration and renewal charges will be Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000.

In the draft notification of the union transport ministry, it has been proposed that the registration fee for imported vehicles will be from Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000.

The report quoted a government official as saying: “The proposal of steep increase in the renewal fee for commercial vehicles, particularly trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles by nearly 27 times is aimed at making people opt for scrapping them once they are over 15-year-old.”
