Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal calls on union defence minister Rajnath Singh at latter's office in New Delhi on Friday.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal called on union defence minister Rajnath Singh and requested him to consider setting up a National Level Training Institute for Armed Forces in Assam.

Sonowal met union defence minister Singh at the latter’s office in New Delhi on Friday.

Chief minister Sonowal during his visit extended congratulations and best wishes to the new defence minister and expressed hope that Assam and Northeast would benefit immensely from his leadership of the armed forces.

He informed the defence minister that insurgency in the region has been controlled to a large extent with full support of the Army and exuded confidence that law and order situation of the state will further improve in the near future.

The chief minister apprised the union minister about various steps taken by the state government to inculcate spirit of nationalism in the youth starting with elaborate three days celebration of Independence Day, holding many national and international sports and other events.

He also informed Singh that in spite of significant deployment of armed forces for guarding the borders and for tackling insurgency in Assam, the state does not have a single institution of armed forces.

“Chief minister Sonowal requested the defence minister to consider setting up a National Level Training Institute of Armed Forces in the state and informed that required land for the institute would be provided by the Assam government,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated.

The chief minister also observed that the national level training institution will inspire the youth of Assam and the Northeast to join armed forces and will promote nationalism and national integration.

On the otherhand, chief minister Sonowal also met union HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal  Nishank at the latter’s official residence in New Delhi on Thursday and discussed various issues related to education scenario of Northeast in general and Assam in particular.

Sonowal also extended best wishes to the HRD minister for his new assignment.
