Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday had a detailed discussion on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at North Block in New Delhi, weeks before the second draft NRC publication.

Senior officials from the Union Home Ministry as well as officials from the State government were present in the meeting.

“We had a detailed discussion over NRC with the Home Minister. The publication of the first phase of NRC was peaceful and we hope, people will cooperate in the second phase too,” said Chief Minister Sonowal after the meeting.

Sonowal also briefed the Union Home Minister about the security measures that have been taken to maintain law and order situation in the State.

He said that both Centre and State are working together for a free and fair NRC publication.

Sources said that Sonowal also briefed Singh about the security arrangements that have been taken to maintain peace and normalcy in the State.

Assam Chief Secretary TY Das, Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia and other senior officials from Assam were present in the meeting. Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (Northeast) and several others represented the Centre.

Meanwhile, Sonowal said that his government will not take any decision which goes against the welfare of the people of the State. He was referring to the recent development that the Central government has decided to hand over several heritage sites in Assam to the private farms.

“We will not take any action which hampers the interests of the citizens… There is a wrong perception doing the round; people will soon get the true picture,” said Sonowal.
