Six truckloads of timber worth Rs 2 crore impounded in Manipur.

Imphal: Six truckloads of timber reportedly smuggled from Myanmar into Manipur through the porous border district of Chandel were impounded and a total of ten alleged smugglers were also apprehended in a drive carried out by the Assam Rifles personnel.

The illegal items valued at around Rs. 2 crore in the regional market were recovered by using Mobile Vehicle Check Posts on Friday, an official said.

Acting on specific information, a team of the Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South)  established Mobile Vehicle Check Posts at the general area of Wamku Junction and Mongsang Panth in Manipur’s Chandel District bordering Myanmar on the south, the officials said.

All of a sudden, the team intercepted six vehicles carrying timber logs along with ten individuals.

The team foiled illegal timber smuggling on Friday. The captured vehicles along with the timber and individuals were handed over to the District Forest Officer, Chandel for further investigation, the officials added.
