Congress legislator from North Karimganj, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, termed the incident of misbehaviour by Assam police to TMC delegation at the Silchar airport at Kumbhirgram in Cachar district as the ‘Black Day’ in the history of India.
Slamming the Assam government for the incident, the Congress legislator said, “Why the government had enacted a drama there in the airport? What is the need to deploy a huge posse of police personnel in the airport? People’s representatives were harassed and assaulted by the police. This is a black day in the history of our country.”

“That we want peace and harmony to prevail in Assam that is alright. We also don’t support ‘civil war’ statement of Mamata Banerjee. But does it mean to kill democracy? Does it mean if MPs come they will be stopped at the airport by the police? It simply means there is something fishy in the whole NRC process. Had it been a transparent process then the government would have allowed the TMC MPs, MLA and minister to visit Silchar,” the Congress legislator told Northeast Now over telephone from Silchar.
According to Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha this situation was created so that nobody wants to know about the NRC. “It was a motivated step by the Assam government so that people do not dare to question about the anomalies in the process of the NRC,” he said.
The Congress legislator was of the opinion that it was a ‘conspiracy’ by the government to marginalize the linguistic and religious minority community in the state.
