The deputy director general of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Nepal, Dr Eklabya Sharma, graced the 11th foundation day celebration of Sikkim University as chief guest in Gangtok on Saturday.

Dr Eklabya Sharma delivered the keynote lecture on ‘Climate Change in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: Developing Solution for Complex Challenges at the Intersection of Environment and Development’ at the function held at the auditorium of Sikkim Manipal University of 5th Mile in Gangtok.
He urged the gathering to look into the intersection of environment and development with special references to the importance of mountain regions of the world.
Sikkim University officiating vice chancellor Jyoti Prakash Tamang delivered the welcome address, where he highlighted the achievements of the Central university since its establishment in 2007.

He highlighted the urgent need for a permanent campus which is ‘creating hurdles for both the staffs and students’.
During the occasion, the first university web page by the department of music was also launched.
Vice president of Sikkim University Teacher’s Association (SUTA), Santosh Kumar Rai; Sikkim University Non-Teaching Association (SUNTA) president Pradeep Kumar Tamang and Sikkim University Student’s Association (SUSA) representative Sonam Bhutia also spoke on the occasion.
The foundation day celebration also included cultural performances.
