Editor of a Nepali daily, Hamro Prajashakti, Anjan Upadhaya has been conferred with Kanchendzonga Kalam Puraskar 2019.

The award was given on the occasion of the 17th foundation day celebration of Press Club of Sikkim on Monday.

Likewise, Lagansheel Yuva Patrakar Samman was awarded to senior visual editor Santosh Gurung of Nayuma Digital Network.

On the occasion, Press Club of Sikkim has also felicitated a newspaper hawker, Kamal Chettri for his contributions.

The awards constituted by the Press Club of Sikkim were handed over by chief minister P S Golay.

Press Club of Sikkim has also felicitated the chief minister.

In his address, the chief minister announced that the Media Welfare Board would be set up to look after the welfare of the journalists and also to have provision of health insurance facilities for media fraternity.

He suggested introducing journalism as a subject in the school.

He also welcomed suggestions and constructive criticism of the government and asserted that press freedom was crucial to the functioning of a true democracy.
