The Sikkim State Central Library under Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department has organized a reading-cum-writing workshop and a storytelling session for school children.

The workshop is being organized at its premises of Manan Kendra in Gangtok to inculcate reading and writing habits in children.

The workshop on reading-cum-writing for school children was inaugurated by the secretary to Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department, Vidya Subba on Wednesday.

This workshop will be followed by a storytelling session for school students on Thursday.

In her inaugural address, the secretary appreciated the efforts of the State Central Library in organizing such creative activities for children.

She encouraged young students to take the full advantage of such activities with great enthusiasm to learn more.

She asserted that such activities to inculcate reading habit was the need of the hour and would help to revive the reading culture in the society.

On the occasion, the secretary also announced to provide the free membership of the library for one year to all participating students in this workshop to encourage reading.

CA&HD additional director, S T Gyatso encouraged students to continue with reading and writing to become more knowledgeable.

He urged students to make use of mobile phones in the positive manner with the right use.

He stated that reading would help in the development of the mind.

He expressed that such workshop would help to inculcate the value of reading and writing in students.

Earlier, the State Central Library OSD, Sangita Bomjan stated that the workshop was the first of its kind organized by the State Central Library for school students.

She stated that the workshop has reading sessions for students from new story books of the library.

Students will also be provided with the library scrapbook materials and then students will be given chance to show their creativity and imaginative skills by writing their own stories and poems based on pictures shown to them, she stated.
