Sikkim karatekas return home with 13 medals from the 4th edition of two-day International Karate Championship held from July 28 at Netaji Subash Chandra Bose stadium in Kolkata. The championship was organised by All India Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation, which has the participation of teams from different parts of the country and Nepal.

A 26-member state team represented Sikkim in the championship led by Taraman Gurung as team coach and Hem Kumari Rai as the team manager. The state team bagged 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.

Biswas Gurung, Vivhan Neopaney, Sakima Rai, Biswadeep Mangar and Yozna Gurung won gold, while silver medals were won by Drishna Rai, Adarsh Tamang, Manisha Chettri and Upendra Gurung. Bronze medals were bagged by Buddha Sundas, Anita Gurung, Bimala Tamang and Bigyasha Tamang.

Sikkim State Karate-Do Associtaion [SSKDA] has felicitated medal winners and team members for their outstanding performance in the championship here at Paljor Stadium this evening. The felicitation programme was chaired by the Sports & Youth Affairs Department Deputy Director, Thupten Rapgyal as the chief guest.

Congratulating the team members Rapgyal appreciated the continuous outstanding performances of Sikkimese Karatekas in the national and international competitions.

SSKDA president, Bijoy Gurung congratulated the entire team members for their outstanding performance in the championship.

“Most of medals were won by cadet and sub-junior players, which is a very good sign for the development of karate in the state,” Gurung said.
