Sikkim: Bear rescued in Gangtok

It took over 12 hours tiring operation to safely rescue a Himalayan Black Bear from BSNL Telephone Exchange situated near MG Marg in Sikkim capital Gangtok.

A Himalayan Black Bear was spotted near the telephone exchange early Wednesday morning and after a long tiring operation for whole day the bear was finally taken out of the building after tranquilization later in the evening.

A team of officials and staffs from Wildlife Division of Forest Department assisted by Sikkim Police struggled for the entire day to rescue the bear.

After seeing a bear early morning at around 5 pm near BSNL Telephone Exchange building, a local resident has immediately informed the district administration.

Working immediately on the information, officials and staffs of Forest Department, Sikkim Police and district administration reached the spot and started the operation.

The bear has injured an engineer of BSNL before it entered and disappeared in the building.

The victim has been identified as Arvind Yadav who has sustained grievous injuries on his head and other parts of the body and presently undergoing treatment at STNM Hospital.

The team of Wildlife Division of Forest Department and Sikkim Police sweated out hard to first spot the bear inside BSNL building and then to tranquilize and rescue it safely from the building.

After a tiring operation for over 12 hours, the Himalayan Black Bear was finally tranquilized and taken out from the building.

Forest minister, Karma Loday Bhutia and other senior officials Forest and Sikkim Police were also present on the spot till the end of the operation.
