Curtains come down on Losar Festival in North Sikkim

Sikkim Urban Development Minister N K Subba has urged all communities of the State to celebrate their festivals with full enthusiasm as such ‘events help in promoting and preserving one’s culture and tradition’.

Subba said this while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Losar Festival in North Sikkim.

The festival was organized by the Lachung Dzomsa at Lachung ground in North Sikkim from February 18 to February 20 with the theme of ‘promoting eco-tourism and archery at Lachung’.

“Our forefathers have left behind them our distinct culture, language and tradition which need to be preserved for the future generation. Festivals are important to safeguard and promote culture and tradition of our different communities. If we stop celebrating our festivals then our children will cease to know about out age-old culture and tradition. We must share and teach our culture and tradition with our children through such events,” the Urban Development Minister said.

He also complimented the people of Lachung in preserving their unique culture and tradition. He added that the Dzomsa system in Lachung and Lachen are unique to the entire country and called upon the locals to preserve the same.

Sikkim Forest and Environment Minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha and deputy Speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly Sonam Gyatso Lepcha were the guests of honour at the concluding programme.

Rajya Sabha MP and celebration committee chief patron Hishey Lachunga was also present on the occasion.

Various colourful cultural presentations by different groups were the added attractions of the festival.

Performances by a cultural group from Bhutan, a cultural troupe from Kalimpong, singers from Nepal and local artistes enthralled the audience on the concluding day.
