Chalak Morcha, the drivers’ front of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party is celebrating the state-level Chalak Diwas in a grand manner on Saturday at Namchi helipad in South Sikkim.

SKM president and the state chief minister P S Golay will be the chief guest of the celebration.

It has to be mentioned that during a meeting on January 7 early this year, SKM president had announced to observe July 27 as Chalak Diwas every year to honour the contribution of driving community.

Later it was also included in the election manifesto 2019 of SKM party.

Addressing a press conference in Gangtok on Wednesday, Chalak Morcha general secretary, Raju Thatal stated that SKM was all set to celebrate the Chalak Diwas in a grand manner on July 27.

He expressed that a day exclusively dedicated to driving community was not only the first in Sikkim but it could be the first in the world.

He stated that main objective of the celebration was to give honour and respect to driving community for their contributions towards the society.

“We want to welcome all our men and women drivers and people of the State to come together in this state-level celebration especially dedicated to driving community,” Thatal said.

Chalak Morcha vice-president, Chung Chung Bhutia stated that SKM party has always been working in the interest and welfare of drivers of the State and this Chalak Diwas was a big respect and honour to driving community.

He added that SKM also wants to set an example in the country by celebrating Chalak Diwas so that others will also follow to give honour to the contributions of drivers.

He stated that the government and private drivers’ associations and organizations have been invited for the celebration and more than 5000 drivers were likely to attend the celebration.

He stated that the chief minister was likely to make announcements in the interest of drivers of Sikkim.

Responding to media queries, Bhutia explained that to take the celebration to Namchi was to give priority to other district as well in the state-level celebration as most of the celebration took place only in Gangtok.
