Guwahati: In a move that is expected to yield a positive response from the villagers, the state government of Sikkim has decided to double the monthly honorarium of Zilla Panchayat and Gram Panchayat members, officials said.
The hike will come into effect on February 1, they said. The state government expects that this move will be seen as a positive initiative in promoting developments around the rural parts of the state.
Zilla panchayat members and Sabhapatis of Gram Panchayats will now receive a monthly honorarium of Rs. 20,000 each against the previous Rs. 10,000, according to a notification.
The 2024 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on or before April 2024 to elect the 32 members of the 11th Sikkim Assembly.
This move by the state government is an attempt to gain some popularity before the polls occur in the state.
