Sikkim Buildings and Housing Minister D T Lepcha on Sunday visited Pakyong to oversee the preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the town for inauguration of the Pakyong airport on September 23.

The Minister and Rhenock MLA Hemendra Adhikari took stock of the progress of work at St Xavier’s school ground, where the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public gathering.
Construction of stage and tents is underway at the venue under the supervision of the Building and Housing Department of Pakyong subdivision.

Meanwhile, the road between the ground and airport is also being repaired by the Roads and Bridges Department.
The Prime Minister would take the road to reach the public address venue after inaugurating the airport.
Earlier on Saturday, both the two venues where Prime Minister NarendraModi would be visiting on September 23 were inspected by a high level team of officials comprising Special Protection Group (SPG) DIG S Suresh, East district police SP HemrajRai, district collector Kapil Meena, officers of Doordarshan Kendras of Guwahati and Gangtok, security agencies, Pakyong SDPO Karma Tshedup Bhutia, SDM T D Denzongpa and other officials.
The team had directed the State Buildings and Housing Department officers at St Xavier’s school playground for setting up of tents, stage, and LED screen for live telecast of the programme at the playground, outside the venue and New Market Pakyongbazaar area.
The team also discussed with the event management at the airport on various points like decorating the terminal building, putting of flags, inaugural desk etc.
The visiting team directed the contractor and the AAI officials to daily update on the progress of the work done in the two venues.
Notably, the SPG team will be coming to Pakyong on September 19 to take over the security charge and also to supervise the preparation of the inaugural and public meeting of the Prime Minister.
