Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim is hosting a one-day karate championship on November 18 next to be and a coaching camp the earlier day, that is November 17.
The championship organized by Geyzing Shito Ryu Seiko Kai Karate Association is the first such event in the State.
organised by the association which has ultra-marathoner Amar Subba as the president and karate player Tshering Yanki Bhutia as the general secretary.
Interacting with media at the Press Club of Sikkim in Gangtok on Wednesday president of the organization, marathoner Amar Subba and general secretary, karate player Tshering Yanki Bhutia informed that the event is being organized to generate interest in sports among youth and kids.
Bhutia was of the opinion that education alone is not sufficient for all-round growth and development of an individual.
He stressed that one must engage in sports activities as well, adding, besides physical and mental benefits, sports also have lots of opportunities professionally.
Bhutia added that the championship is themed ‘Yes to sports, no to drugs’ and also aims at diverting the youngsters’ minds from negative elements like drug and alcohol consumption.
The championship is expected to have participation from around 100 amateur karatekas from Sikkim, Darjeeling and Siliguri.
On the eve of the championship, a one day training camp will be organized for the participants and all those interested. Notably, Bishan Mothay from Nepal and Pradip Sarkar from West Bengal will be imparting the training.
