Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling’s wife Tika Maya Chamling inaugurated the waste composting machine at Lall Bazaar in Gangtok on Monday.
The waste composting machine is set up by Gangtok Municipal Corporation with a capacity of 1 tonne, which was sponsored by Rockefeller Foundation and supported by ICLEI-Local Government for Sustainability, South Asia.

After inaugurating the waste composting machine, T M Chamling attended the workshop on Kitchen Waste, Composting and Terrace Gardening as chief guest, held at a local hotel.
The programme was attended by Arithang Constituency MLA Shyam Pradhan, GMC Mayor Shakti Singh Chaudhary, Deputy Mayor, Chairman of GMC, Councillors, Secretary Urban Development and Housing Department and other officials from UD&HD and Horticulture and GMC.
Addressing the gathering Chamling congratulated GMC for installing waste composting machine in Gangtok adding that this is for the first time such kind of machine has been set up and it is a great opportunity for the people of Gangtok.

Talking on the advantage of terrace gardening in GMC area, she urged everyone to adopt roof-top farming and gardening and requested GMC and Horticulture department to assist Gangtokians on such kind of practice.
“Terrace farming or gardening will act as insulator in different weather condition accordingly and we have to encourage every individual for this kind of farming our state needs mostly in urban areas. This field is endless and we have to take terrace farming diligently” TM Chamling said. She also spoke about perennial farming.
Earlier GMC Commissioner Tshewang Gyachho informed that GMC will distribute eco-bins in all the wards under GMC.
Deputy Director of Horticulture Department K Lachungpa briefed on proper utilization of terrace by practicing roof-top farming, kitchen gardening etc.
