Shillong is all set to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi arriving Saturday afternoon to attend a government programme and address Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) ‘Rally for Change’ at the Polo Grounds in Meghalaya’s capital city.

This is the second visit of Modi after becoming Prime Minister. Last year, he was on a two-day visit to address the 65th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC).

Meghalaya Chief Secretary Y Tsering while briefing media on Friday said security has been enhanced in view of the visit of the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister will land at Upper Shillong helipad at 1 pm from Mizoram. Then he will proceed to Sports Training Centre Complex at Polo Grounds and at 1.30 pm, he will unveil the plaque to mark the inauguration of Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road.

Later, he will address the public rally at Ground Number 5 of the iconic Polo Grounds from 1.40 pm to 2.30 pm. He will also inaugurate the BJP party office and leave for Delhi around 3.30 pm from Upper Shillong.

Union Ministers Jitendra Singh and KJ Alphons and Assam Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will accompany the Prime Minister.

State BJP leaders informed that they are expecting a crowd between 15,000 and 20,000.

Meanwhile, the Shillong Traffic Police on Friday afternoon conducted a drill for traffic management in view of Modi’s visit and different areas of the town witnessed massive traffic snarls following the drill.

Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has informed the general public attending the public rally of the Prime Minister that items such as sharp objects, umbrellas, cigarettes, lighters/match boxes, water bottles and lethal weapons, are prohibited inside the venue of the rally.
