Tinsukia district of Assam on Wednesday witnessed series of protests against the killing of father-son duo by the banned militant outfit ULFA-I.

Militants gunned down the father-son duo namely Anteswar Mahanta and Karun Mahanta at Hunjan under Bordumsa in Tinsukia District on Monday evening.

Sporadic incidents of violence erupted on Wednesday morning during a dawn to dusk bandh besides road blockades at various locations in the district.

Agitating protestors shouted slogans against the ULFA-I and government in the aftermath of killings.

Various students’ organisations took to the streets against the ULFA-I attack on Monday evening.

AASU, AJYCP, Tai -Ahom , Moran, Mottock, Gorkha , Bhojpuri students’ union resorted to road blockade earlier in the morning. The agitators shouted slogans demanding justice to those killed by ULFA-I. They also demanded adequate compensation of rupees one crore to the victims’ family.

Agitators torched several vehicles and snatched keys from drivers in Tinsukia town.  In Digboi, Bordumsa, Pengaree, Doomdooma and Kakopather the aggrieved protestors set tyres on fire on the road to stop plying of vehicles.

Shops downed their shutters and most of the people preferred to remain in doors.

The student’s organisations lambasted the indifferent attitude of Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP government and Assam administration for its weakness and failure to protect the life and property of the common people.

Secretary of Digboi unit of Moran students’ organisation termed ULFA-I’s claim of killing the father-son duo as the informers of police as baseless and false. He asked the militants to stop such heinous and cowardice act.

Criticising the security lapse in this incident, the student body also demanded a probe into it. The student body also challenged ULFA-I to prove their claim with evidence that the slain duos were spying for security agencies.

Meanwhile, the government has deployed security forces on effective format to avert further deterioration of law and order in the district.

A district police official informed NE NOW that an intensive counter insurgency operation was being carried out across the district and along the Assam -Arunachal, Assam-Myanmar border to nab the culprits.
