A psycho serial killer is apparently on the prowl in Assam killing women in train toilets. Railway authorities and police are totally clueless.

Within 24 hours, two women were found killed in train toilets. The incidents sent shivers down the spine of women travellers, particularly those who travel by trains. Unfortunately the union minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain is silent on these two incidents. Gohain was busy participating in road safety programme in Nagaon whereas safety of women in trains has apparently gone for a toss.

Railways declared year 2018 as women safety year. In January this year the railway minister announced that special emphasis would be given on preventing of human trafficking, with focus on children and women on railway premises. These two incidents simply make mockery of such announcement on women’s safety in train.

The body of 45-year old Lalima Debi was recovered from the toilet of Avadh Assam Express at Mariani on Wednesday. She was strangled to death and killed the same way Radha Kumari was killed in the toilet of the Dibrugarh-Rangiya Express on Tuesday.

Radha Kumari was the B Sc fourth semester student of the College of Agriculture, Assam Agricultural University. Lalima Devi hailed from Kodomoni Boiragi Math in Dibrugarh. She had boarded the train at Dibrugarh station and was traveling to Bihar.

Both the places of incidents are located in Upper Assam. While Radha Kumari’s body was found at the Simaluguri junction in Sivasagar district, Lalima Devi’s body was found at Mariani junction in Jorhat district. In both the cases the victims are from same community. They were murdered almost in the identical manner. Their bodies were found lying half naked and bore marks on their faces. Both the victims were strangled to death with a cloth and a gamosa.

The serial killer has apparently targeted the compartment reserved for the differently abled persons. Because both the victims boarded the compartments reserved for the differently abled people. This has also raised questions about the safety measures adopted by railways for the differently abled passengers travelling by trains.
