A Myanmar-trained cadre of the insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) was nabbed by Army and police during a joint operation from Pengeri in Tinsukia district on Thursday. The ULFA-I militant identified as Sanjib Moran alias Kalia was involved in extortion and other militant activities in the district, police said.

A .32 pistol was recovered from the possession of the ULFA-I militant. Moran was being interrogated at the Pengeri police station by senior police officials.

Recently the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-I has stepped up its activities in Tinsukia district. Apart from indulging in mass extortion targeting businessmen and tea planters, the proscribed outfit was recently involved in the killing of a local BJP leader and his son in the district apart from the kidnapping a businessman’s son.

The militant outfit had to face severe backlash from the local community following the twin incidents, which was kind of unprecedented in recent time.
