The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday refused stay on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and asked the Centre to reply to petitions challenging the Act on grounds that it violates the Constitution.
The next date of hearing has been fixed on January 22, 2020.

Around 60 petitions were filed in the apex court after the Parliament passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) also filed a petition the apex court challenging CAA.
There have been widespread protests in Assam and Tripura against the new Act and so far five people have died in police firing in Assam.

Curfew was clamped in the state and mobile internet has also been suspended, which is likely to continue till Thursday.
AASU has also launched mass Satyagraha in Assam on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday against the Act.
Several individuals and organisations have come out to the street protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
