‘Say No to Crackers’ awareness campaign in Dimapur

Dimapur on Friday launched ‘Say No to Crackers’ awareness programme to promote crackers-free Christmas and New Year celebration.

Bursting of crackers may be a delight for few but it creates side effects for many. Towards this end, the Nagaland Pollution Control Board with NGOs of Dimapur, including Cleaning Brothers, organised second ‘Say No to Crackers’ awareness campaign from Church Road to City Tower point here on Friday.

The campaign was held under the themes: Let’s celebrate a crackers-free Christmas and New Year this season. Let’s fill our home with prayers and light rather than with noise and fumes. Let’s celebrate with peace rather than disturbance.

Volunteers from NGOs and general public joined the campaign urging the people to put a stop to bursting of crackers.

Meanwhile, the Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has strongly warned against the use of firecrackers in urban Dimapur especially during the festive season. The council has declared that it is time for citizens to put an end to the health hazard and noise pollution once and for all and stop celebrating Christmas ‘like pagans.’

In a release, the council reminded the citizens in Dimapur that firecrackers are destroying the health of the people and the environment. The organisation has pointed to the dangers of the toxins and chemicals released by firecrackers, and the respiratory and nervous disorders that affect pregnant women and children particularly.

“Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation is totally against bursting of crackers within Dimapur urban area, especially during festive seasons,” the release stated.

Appreciating the NSCN-IM for banning crackers, the federation hoped the armed group’s authority would take proper deterrent action against the source (suppliers and sellers) of crackers.

A follow up action as per the press notice of NSCN-IM is expected and will be applauded, the DUCCF said

The organisation has also asked community leaders to check firecrackers in their respective area and also informed all the colony councils and chairmen to check crackers in their respective jurisdiction.
