Sonowal calls on Gadkari, proposes construction of ring road encircling State Capita Region

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday called on Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari at New Delhi and discussed various issues of road communication in the state.

The chief minister apprised the Union Minister of state government’s initiative to expand Guwahti city for establishing State Capital Region and also proposed construction of a ring road for improving the road connectivity within the state capital region area. The Union Minister agreed to the proposal and asked the chief minister to allot land for building the proposed ring road.

Saying that the state government would take steps for providing land for building the ring road, chief minister Sonowal said that the problem of traffic congestion of the Guwahati city would be solved once the ring road encircling the State Capital Region is built which would ensure speedy development of the city outskirts. The ring would add to the beauty of the State Capital Region area and would prove to be a vital asset, he said.

During the meeting, the chief minister also invited Gadkari to Majuli for inaugurating the Rs 237 crore project for protecting the island from erosion on December 29 and the Union Minister accepted the invitation for laying the foundation stone for the same.

The issue of construction of express highway on both sides of the Brahmaputra River also came up for discussion in the meeting.

Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Sanjay Lohia and Principal Secretary of Finance Department Ravi Kota were also present in the meeting.          

In line with the National Capital Region, Assam will have a ‘State Capital Region’ encompassing Guwahati and its peripheral areas with the passing of Assam State Capital Region Development Authority (ASCRDA) Bill 2017 by voice vote to set up the regional authority for preparation of a plan for rapid development of the SCR.
