Independent legislator from Mawhati in poll-bound state of Meghalaya, Julias Kitbok Dorphang who is currently in jail, has resigned as member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Another Independent legislator from South Tura constituency, John Leslee K Sangma also resigned as member of the Assembly.
Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons said that Dorphang as well as John submitted their resignation letters and the same were forwarded to the Speaker for information and necessary action.
Dorphang submitted his resignation through his lawyer.
Dorphang, the former chairman of the outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), has been in jailed since last year for his alleged involvement in sexual exploitation of a minor girl.
Dorphang was booked under POCSO Act.
Meanwhile, John Leslee has been tipped as NCP candidate from South Tura in the upcoming Assembly polls slated for February 27.
Though Dorphang has resigned, it was not known if he would contest as the candidate of any political party from Mawhati or seek re-election as Independent candidate.
