Renowned Assamese novelist Purabi Bormudoi passes away at 59

Noted Assamese writer and novelist Purabi Bormudoi passed away at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here on Monday morning following prolonged illness. She was 59.

Wheel-chair bound Bormudoi was a recipient of prestigious Sahitya Akademi award.

She was suffering from multiple ailments for the past few years and was admitted to GMCH recently following her condition turned critical.

Born on May 8, 1950 at Deurigaon in central Assam’s Tezpur, Bormudoi was known for her critically acclaimed novels such as Gajraj Prem Aru Banditwa, Rupoali Noi Sonowali Ghat, Shantanukulanandan and Baghsal, Baghjal Aru Manuh.

Although every novel she had written received huge accolades, it was Baghsal, Baghjal Aru Manuh which had captured the imagination of her readers for its outstanding plot.

She had received the Sahitya Akademi award for her novel Shantanukulanandan in 2017.

She passed matriculation in 1967 from Tezpur Higher Secondary and Multipurpose Girls’ School and completed her graduation from Darrang College, Tezpur in 1970.  She did her masters in history from Gauhati University in 1973.

Bormudoi, who gave up her teaching job to become a full-time writer, also received Basanti Bordoloi award (2007), Prabina Saikia award (2007), Asom Upatyaka award (2012) besides Sahitya Academy award (2007).

She leaves behind her husband Ananda Bormudoi, a noted literary critic and former professor of Dibrugarh University, only son and daughter-in-law, grand children and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
