Dibrugarh police on Monday morning arrested Rajen Mardi, the prime accused in the alleged rape and murder of five-year-old girl in Upper Assam’s Moran in Dibrugarh district.
Body of the minor, who went missing on April 2, was found floating in Tiloi river in Moran on April 6.
Moran police registered a case against Mardi after family members of the minor filed a complaint accusing him of kidnaping the five-year-old.
The minor was last seen with Mardi at Tiloi Nagar on April 2. The incident triggered massive public outrage in Moran area.
The officer-in-charge of Moran police station, Bhaskarjyoti Phukan was suspended for failing to arrest the accused and rescues the minor.
Locals staged protest in Moran demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
The protesters blocked National Highway No. 37 and shouted slogans against the government for allegedly failing to ensure security of woman and children.
Mardi is currently being interrogated at Dibrugarh SP office, sources said.
