Political violence erupts in Tripura with the announcement of poll schedule

Several persons were injured, one of them critically, in political violence that broke out in Tripura immediately after the announcement of election schedule by the EC.

With the declaration of the election dates, the poll bound Tripura has apparently turned into a virtual battle ground with BJP and Left supporters fighting against each other.

In a Bijay Pratigna Sankalp rally organized by BJP across the 60 assembly constituencies, a BJP supporter was left critically injured when the CPI-M supporters allegedly attacked them at Sonichara area in Dharmanagar.

The BJP supporters were reportedly marching towards the Sonichara area when some of the CPI-M supporters attacked the BJP supporters.  One of the BJP supporters identified as Rana Sinha was injured seriously.

The accused CPI-M supporters were identified as Bipul Chanda and Pradip Chanda.

Rana Sinha was immediately referred to district hospital for further treatment. Later he was referred to hospital outside the state for better treatment.

BJP has filed a complaint against the two CPI-M supporters for allegedly beating up Rana Sinha.

Of late, Tripura has witnessed series of political violence including murders. It may be mentioned that on January 15 a BJP worker was brutally murdered allegedly by ruling CPI-M.

The incident took place at Kathacherra village under Sidhai PS of Shimna constituency of West Tripura district.

On January 3 last, a BJP supporter Amulya Malakar of Rajnagar under PR Bari police station in South Tripura was hacked to death allegedly by a CPI-M supporter while five others including two were seriously injured.
