The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will take responsibility of reconstruction of the statue of the founder of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, which was defaced by miscreants in Kokrajhar on Tuesday night.
This was stated by the spokesperson of the Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Banamali Boro.
While vehemently condemning the vandalisation of the bust at the Ram Krishna Road in Rabindra Nagar under Ward No 4 of Kokrajhar town by some miscreants on Tuesday night, State BJP spokesperson Boro told media persons on Thursday, “The BJP party itself will take the responsibility of reconstructing the statue of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee which was defaced by some miscreants.”
Boro stated this while visiting the site of the incident on Thursday evening. He also demanded the district administration to immediately nab the culprits involved in the incident.
On Wednesday, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh along with other senior officials and the District Magistrate visited the spot and started investigation into the incident. The leaders of the district BJP and workers also visited the site of the bust to take the stock of situation.
Former president of Kokrajhar district BJP Santosh Tarafder said the statue of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was installed at Rabindra Nagar in 2001 by the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park Construction Committee. He demanded that the perpetrators be brought to book.
Bibhuti Brahma, the president of Kokrajhar district BJP strongly condemning the act demanded that police should arrest the culprits involved in defacing of statue immediately and severely punish them. He also informed the district BJP lodged an FIR at Kokrajhar Police Station regarding the incident.
This is the second incident of defacement of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s statue. The first incident took place in Kolkata on March 7.
Former Rajya Sabha MP and the president of the United People’s Party-Liberal (UPPL) UG Brahma strongly condemned the act of demolishing statue of great figure. He said the act could be of certain elements which want to create disturbance in the district. He also demanded strong action against the miscreants and also appealed all to maintain peace and harmony.
It may be mentioned that earlier, two statues of the Communist icon Vladimir Lenin were vandalized in Tripura and social reformer Periyar’s statue was vandalized in Tamil Nadu.
