While the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being updated in Assam, a district-level special task force committee in Mizoram has decided to create a mechanism for identifying and deporting undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants from the border areas of the state.
The committee held a meeting, chaired by district deputy commissioner Benjamin Lalzama, in Lungleion Thursdayto discuss ways to tackle the influx of immigrants. Senior Border Security Force officials and leaders of civil societies were present at the meeting.
Officials posted along the border areas were instructed to be extra careful while issuing birth and residential certificates to people and ensure that no foreign nationals were in possession of such documents.
Mizoram has been facing a democratic nightmare due to unchecked flow of Bangladeshi nationals, mainly from the Chakma community. There are reports that a lot of illegal Bangladeshi nationals had settled in eastern Mizoram using forged documents.
