Ahead of the Assembly scheduled for month in Meghalaya, a half-day orientation programme on Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) was conducted in the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong for representatives from various political parties.

A detailed and thorough presentation on the functioning of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and the VVPAT was made, followed by practical session on the functioning of the various components of the EVM including the VVPAT. The session included mock poll and verification of the slips dispensed by the VVPAT, wherein, the representatives of the various political parties participated.
The session was attended by the representatives of the lndian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), United Democratic Party (UDP), Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and other regional parties.
This is for the first time that VVPAT has been introduced in Meghalaya. The procedure will be utilized during the ensuing Assembly elections scheduled to be held sometime in the month of Febraury.
