Assam Police on Sunday arrested one from Noonmati area in Guwahati on charges of sexual assault of a minor. Another person involved in the heinous crime is absconding.
The accused have been identified as 32-year-old Sukaram Basumatary, relative of the victim, and 30-year-old Sukharam Boro, her neighbour. Both the accused hail from Baksa district.
Though Boro has been arrested by police, Basumatary, who is a driver, is on the run.
Based on an input, Guwahati Childline in co-operation with Noonmati police rescued the victim on Sunday evening and handed over the accused to the police.
Officer in-charge of Noonmati Police Station, Chidananda Bora told Northeast Now that as per the victim’s statement both the accused have been sexually harassing the 13-year-old victim for the last few months.
Police informed that the incident took place at a hut made on the railway land near railway line at Noonmati area in the city.
A case (No 683/18) under section 376 (i) of the Indian Penal Code and section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) has been registered at the Noonmati Police Station.
