App-based cab service provider Ola has identified three routes for beginning a river taxi service on the Brahmaputra in Guwahati.

One route will connect Lachit Ghat with North Guwahati, the second one will connect Uzanbazar and Umananda, while the third route will link Lachit Ghat and Palasbari on the city outskirts.

“Service on the first two routes would begin soon, while the third would take some time. We need to develop road connectivity in and around Palasbari. The distance between Palasbari Ghat and the LGBI Airport is around five km. Unless there is a proper road on that stretch, the taxi service would not serve the purpose. The aim is to connect the airport,” the sources said.

The fares are also yet to be finalised. Ola is also developing an app for the river taxi service.

Two river taxis which were brought to the State following the Advantage Assam summit have conducted trials on the Brahmaputra and identified the three feasible routes.

Ola inked an MOU with Assam government on February to pilot the app-based river taxi service in in Guwahati.

The MoU was  signed in the presence of Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister for Transport Industry and Commerce and Vijay Ghadge, Vice President Operations of Ola at the on-going ‘Global Investors Summit: Advantage Assam in Guwahati

Ola launched in the state of Assam in December 2014.
