Pro-talk ULFA leader Anup Chetia’s comment comes as a reaction to Hindu Bengali Youth Federation leader Sukumar Biswas’ statement on the rehabilitation of Hindu-Bangladeshis.
Pro-talk United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Anup Chetia on Thursday claimed that the obstinacy of the Hindu-Bangladeshis in Assam has increased during the regime of the BJP-led government in the State.
Talking to Northeast Now, after the citizens’ convention of the Matak community held in the city on Thursday, ULFA general secretary Chetia said, “The BJP government at the Centre introduced the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Parliament only to provide citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshis. As a result, the obstinacy of the Hindu-Bangladeshis in Assam has increased. “
It may be mentioned that the Hindu Bengali Youth Federation demanding rehabilitation of Hindu Bangladeshis in India submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at his office chamber in the Janata Bhawan here on Wednesday.
After submitting the memorandum, Hindu Bengali Youth Federation leader Sukumar Biswas had told media persons, “Though the people of Assam have opposed rehabilitation of Hindu Bangladeshis in the State, we demand that the Hindu-Bangladeshis be rehabilitated in India.”
He also said, “After separation with India, the Muslims now have two separate countries. So, we have demanded 100 per cent rehabilitation of Hindu-Bangladeshis in India where majority of the population are Hindu.”
He also said, “No one has right to prevent rehabilitation of Hindu-Bangladeshis in India.”
Reacting to the comment of Sukumar Biswas, Chetia said, “The comment by Sukumar Biswas before the media is very unfortunate for the ethnic Assamese community. It is yet to be ascertained, the position of the ethnic people of Assam is going towards which direction. The Assamese community is now under threat.”
Stating that there is no benefit of asking the government to take steps against such forces Chetia said, “The government introduced the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill with an aim to give citizenship to these Hindu Bangladeshis. The government has been speaking in favour of them. Therefore the willfulness of the Hindu Bangladeshis has been on the rise after the BJP came to power.”
