More than one thousand cases relating to submission of fake NRC documents are pending in various police stations in Darrang district.

This has come to light at a time when less than 24 hours left for the publication of draft NRC in Assam.

Sources said the Darrang NRC authorities had filed a total of 1326 cases relating to submission of forged documents for inclusion of names in draft NRC but most of these cases have been at different police stations of the district left without settlement.

“We lodged a total of 1326 cases relating to submission of fake documents of legacy data during the NRC document verification,” Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati, District Nodal Officer, NRC cum Additional Deputy Commissioner, Darrang, told  Northeast Now.

“Most of the fake documents are related to certificates of venture schools besides birth certificate, family identity card or ration card and Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC),” added Bhagawati.

According to a report, till the month of March this year, the district NRC authority recorded a total of 424 such police complaints.

Mangaldai police station recorded the maximum of 153 cases, followed by Dalgaon 79, Dhula 68, Sipajhar 60 and Kharupetia with the lowest no of 49 cases.

In a single day on April 20 in 2016, highest no of 50 complaints were filed in Dalgaon Police Station. Similarly on January 24 in 2017 altogether 39 FIRs in connection with fake NRC documents were lodged in Mangaldai Police Station.

On February 18 and March 15 in 2017 a total of 22 and 18 cases respectively were lodged in Mangaldai Police Station.

The report further revealed that on the basis of these complaints police initiated investigation in 20 cases and arrested 22 accused including ASHA worker, village head among others.

The figure has gone up with more and more incidents of fake documents have been detected in during the NRC update exercise and now the figure of FIRs lodged stands at 1326.
